CONCEPT DESIGN:FILMING OUR ADVERTS

For this task we filmed our adverts with the same groups we worked with for our pitch. Our task for this was to create a script for based on our storyboard we presented last week. As we were writing our scripts had to think about how we're going to edit our piece once it's been filmed things such as the type of camera shots being used for each scene in our scripts, voice overs and soundtrack  (song that would be playing through out).

Me, Sintesha & Penny continued getting on with our scripts/filming for our adverts. We focused on the script first before we even thought about filming, throughout today all we did was just discuss what would and would not work in our script. This task was quite difficult having to think about certain things and how it has to make sense so it's understandable on where things would edited. Also while we were piecing our script together we didn't everything from what the Principle said last week because there were things that did work. Things we had to do was..........

* Find soundtrack for our advert (Advert instrumentals)
*Costumes.....
 - Sports kit
 - Apron
 - Lab coat & safety goggles
 - Waist coat &bow tie (Get From Gary)

*Props
- Basketball
- Paint brushes & paint
- Test tube, baking soda and vinegar
- Metal tray, coffee cup and cappuccino
- Baking Powder

Plans for our script and whole advertisement

The process

Our plan  was for each of us to do our own individual thing and piece our ideas together. For example Sintesha would write the script, Penny would give her some ideas an I would be filming around the College. Unfortunately things didn't go as well as planned because they had auditions and were not coming in plus Wednesdays Child rehearsals we didn't get anything done. Since Sintesha & Penny didn't come in I thought to myself ''Why am I waiting on them when I can begin filming'' but the only problem was Sintesha had the script and if I started filming without them I feared that I would mess something up and they would  start complaining so what I decided to do was to just wait on them. After two weeks waiting on them that is when I finally came to a conclusion that I might as-well start now!, since they're going to keep postponing it, sometimes I don't even know why I bother. This was a tough situation to be put in since other groups have finished filming and have moved on to editing. I didn't want to keep nagging Sintesha & Penny ''Are we filming today?, When are we gonna start? , I felt like an idiot asking them that continuously, after that I just gave up and began filming. The problem with me filming by myself is that I didn't know how to use the camera, having to go around asking staff from different departments to film them, doing this my free time, and my main issue not knowing how to use final cut pro to edit my footage. Before I went and filmed by myself I asked Alex & Yusuf if it would be fine to film by myself, I explained the whole situation to them and they said I could. They told me get as much footage as I can. I tried to get the 8 shots that were on the storyboard but students from other departments were scared of being filmed, I clearly told them it's for a project and they don't have say anything all I they have to do is just do what they are doing whilst I film them. Since none of the students volunteered I just gave up, I persuaded them as much as I could but still no one volunteered. Also time was a major problem because I only had a week to get this done & over with and I was behind. I didn't really expect the process to be like this and for me to be put in this difficult situation. Going around the college and asking staff if I could film there students was quite a mission because some of the teachers were not in and they kept saying come another time another time. Obviously there was no other time and I had a week to get this completed. I didn't get the shots/ footage I wanted for my advert except from the art, sports & expressive arts departments but when I started editing I asked Edward if I can use some of unused footages that he had on his camera which his group didn't use (Thank God!).

This hasn't been a very good process two of my partners wasting my time when there's other stuff to get done, having to do this on my own and running around the College like a maniac asking staff/students to use their space or film them. It's been a crazy process, but I'm happy that I got most of my bit done and did the filming on my own. Also I learnt new things as well but what I mainly learnt is not to wait on anyone else, use my common sense more and be more independent.

Here's the footage that I filmed.......

Again I would have got a lot more footage than this but because I only had week to get this done and I kept waiting on Sintesha & Penny. My only back plan was to use some unused footage that Edwards group din't include in their advert, they had plenty of unused footage which really saved me (Nice people). When it came to the editing bit, I kind of knew how to use Final cut pro but my fear is of using that if I play around with tit too much I might end up losing some of my footage. Instead of bothering Jack & Newman I got Edward to help me edit since he knows how to use this software very well.

From that's how I that's how I got things done and if wasn't for Edwards help I would have failed this whole entire unit. :D

CONCEPT DESIGN WEEK 2: GROUP PITCH IN FRONT OF PRINCIPLE

WEEK 2

This week we continued looking at Concept Design after our pitch last week and this time we had to do an advertisement promoting the college encouraging people to come and study here. For this we were put into groups of four, in my group it was me, Penny, Sintesha & Pierce, since we knew that Pierce wasn't going to come in this week so we decided to work as a three. Our task was to..........

* Draw up a detailed storyboard

* Design an advert for the College (Not just Performing Arts), such as

 excellent facilities, Outstanding Achievements, Progression, College atmosphere
  and Learning Opportunities

* What makes Leyton better than other local colleges within the borough

  of Waltham Forest

*Enrichments

*10 key features

*Pitch (maximum-5 mins)

* Mood board

Before me Sintesha & Penny came up with ideas of what is going to be in the advert, we had to sit down and share with each other our ideas what could and might not work. Also for our mood board we spoke about certain things within the college such as Enrichments, Courses and Facilities. For the Enrichments we talking about what activities they offer such as Sports and Expressive Arts activities- starting with our block (Expressive Arts) the Activities we have are........

* Showcases for PA & MT (Performing Arts and Musical Theatre)

* Theatre shows with different types of performances such as Cafe theatre,
   Drama and Musicals. Also studio shows which are performed in he drama studio
  also run in our department no musicals just straight acting.

* Music gigs/concerts

* 7:00pm Cinema, with a variety of films being shown

For the Sports Activities they offer........

*Fitness centre
*Badminton
*Football
*Table Tennis
*Boxing (for fitness)
*Gymnastics
*Basketball
*Cheer leading
*Tap Dancing
* Street Dance
* Duke of Edinburgh

Our first rough idea was to have our storyboard beginning with A-level students doing work and their teacher asking them a question at once al students raise their hands up. For the editing-quick shots (fast pace editing) would be used of different subjects/courses, Enrichment programmes (E.G. Football & all other activities), soundtrack/music of Musical Theatre singing a song throughout the whole advert, Technicians playing around with the lighting, Science students doing experiments and Arts students drawing and painting portraits.

Also we came up with an idea to have 1 person from PA as a tour guide going to each class/department and when he/she enters the classroom their clothes change. E.G......

- Science= Lab clothes
- Sports Department= Sportswear
- Art= Apron
- PA/MT= blacks

My main idea was to have a boy go around the College and interviewing students/staff, asking students what there course is about, what they have gained out of it and where it leads them to. Also the boy would be asking the staff about the facilities in the college-what they think of it. We didn't use this idea because there would be too much talking and it wouldn't engage well with our target audience. Also it would be dull as well having one guy talk about the college with the camera just facing him rather than having students from different courses/departments talking about the courses from the own experience instead of one man interviewing them and talking about the course after interviewing the student. Since our target audience is aimed at teenagers (people applying for colleges) to them it would just look fake.

(This is me & Penny's idea put together with the storyboard. The drawing on the right is my idea)

All of these were the rough ideas we came up with before we started piecing this together. When we finished discussing on what's going to be on our storyboard, we then decided who's researching what. Sintesha looked up other colleges (What makes LSC better ?) comparing things they have or do not have compared to Leyton. For example Monux have a 99% pass rate and benches for students to relax, eat or socialise which is the same as any other college's but they do not have the facilities or Enrichment activities that we have. These were the things Sintesha researched so she could have a lot to talk about when she's pithing. Also she was responsible for the mood board, taking pictures around the colleges getting images on Google and put them up on the mood board. Penny drew up the storyboard and I looked up the Enrichments and 10 Key Features within the college.

Here's what I found out about the enrichments & 10 Key Features.........

Sports Activities - Competitions won/top of the league at the moment

* Girls & Boys Football match (won majority of the finals)
* Boys Rugby Match (Won match)
* Men's Basketball team
* Table Tennis
* Badminton
* Netball
* Cheer leading
* Volleyball
* Cricket team

10 Key Features within the College

1. Good exam/vocational results with a 99% pass rate
2. New Facilities & Resources
3. A variety of Enrichment activities
4. Diverse & Vibrant Atmosphere
5. Great progression onto university
6. Rated 'Good' by Ofsted in 2013
7. Excellent tutor support such as......
 - Weekly tutorials
 - One to one support
 - Target setting and monitoring students progress
 - Academic review days
8. Expert Staff
9. A student voice that counts
10. A popular destination

(Our Mood Board)

Finalised storyboard/Pitch Script

For our final storyboard idea, our idea was to have two tour guides (a boy and a girl) in front of the college going around the departments where subjects/vocational courses are and joining in in what they do. For instance it would start of with the boy going to the sports department and the camera would focus on any of the boys from the gym talking about what exercises they do in the gym, what they have gained and where it leads to ?, from there on the boy would go to the Art department painting a portrait, once he's left the art department he would go into the Science department doing experiments. As the boy and girl to different departments their clothes will change which shows that they are involved and intrigued what other subjects/courses offer. E.G. when the boy is in the sports department he would be in his sportswear (football kit) and he will be seen on the college football pitch playing with the boys. For the girl when she is in the Art department she will be seen wearing an apron and painting a portrait. At the end of the storyboard it would show the boy & girl looking at the facilities in the college especially in the Expressive Arts department. They would be looking at facilities such as the recording studio, theatre, dance studio, music rooms and drama studio. Also they would go to the film & TV studio where most of the media students would use to film little clips for any upcoming projects they've got.

The soundtrack I thought of that will be used playing in the background was the instrumental of the song '' Hey Yah!'' by duo Outkast. The song I wanted use was 'Bezerk' by Eminem, because it's too upbeat and not everyone is into hip hop it wouldn't really show a good image, promoting the College.

(Our finalised storyboard)

PITCH SCRIPT

Whilst me & Sintesha were sorting out the mood board and storyboard, Penny wrote up our pitch script and on that there were 16 steps, info about the storyboard. It was quite long so what we decided to do is split it up. Penny spoke about the first 7 steps, Sintesha spoke from step 8-11 and I spoke from step 12-16. I found it quite difficult practising our pitch since everything had to be done ASAP and I was very low on confidence. What I've realised is that when it comes to Pitching ideas in front of a panel I'm weak on, but at the moment I'm trying to confront that fear and not let that hold me back.

My Pitch Script

Step 12: HUB/LIBRARY

* Girl & Boy walking through the hub talking about how it's a great place to work.
Showing the study rooms and library.

Step 13: SPORTS DEPARTMENT

* Once they've left the hub they'll then walk through the Sports department
showing the gym & vending machines.

Step 14: CANTEEN

* After that they will both walk through the canteen showing the amount
of snacks and great food they have. Also they'll show the student lockers
where personal belongs are kept.

Step 15: COLLAGE

* Also a collage will be shown of great things around the college with a
voice over talking about the 99% pass rate and how the college is a friendly
and multicultural environment.

Step 16: END OF STORYBOARD

* At the end the boy and girl will be walking out of the college in the evening talking
about being safe in the college with one of the security guards telling them to have
a nice evening with a smile showing that LSC is a secure and safe place to be.

After that the camera will then pan above their heads showing the college logo
''LSC'' appearing with the website link at the bottom.

As soon as Penny & Sintesha spoke about the other steps, this is the last step I would finish on. I'm glad I managed to practice this before Friday.

CONCEPT DESIGN: WEEK 1 FIRST PITCH IDEAS

WEEK 1

This week we looked at Concept Design creating an advertisement for a product or a short film. For our Pitching list this is what we needed..........

* £7500 Budget (film budget)
* Actors - who's going to be involved in this project
* Location - how much it will cost ?
* Film Crew-who is doing what (Cameraman)
* Create a Storyboard/Mood Board
* Target Audience

We had to get into pairs for this task and I worked with Brendan. The idea that we came up with for our pitch was an advertisement for a short film. This advert that we did focuses on a former Olympic silver medallist preparing for his professional Début. In this advert fast pace editing/Quick shots will be used to show different workout routines that the Boxer does such as push ups, sit ups, chin ups, lunges, bag work, shadow boxing and so on.... . Also a voice over will be used of the Boxer saying how much he's gained out of the sport encouraging others to take it up.

In our project we wouldn't really need Actors because I can just get one of the guys from the gym and do a couple of shots with them, but it will have to be one that's turning pro. With our location it will be filmed at TRAD TKO Boxing gym in Canning Town, where I also train at  but we're not going to use the whole space in the gym only the punch bag and the ring.

What Brendan and I decided to do was to do is that I would start of first with my pitch talking about our advert about the short film what's it's about, Voice Overs, Budget, Actors and Location. Once I finished talking about that Brendan would talk about film crew, showing the storyboard and target audience.

For my bit I listed my ideas in bullet point form so that it's easier instead of just highlighting key words from the paragraphs I wrote. Here's how I planned my pitching part and what I found out about location and cost ............

* Advert for a short film about Boxing

* This focuses on a former Olympic Silver medallist preparing for his professional début

* Fast pace editing (or Quick Shots) will be used in this to show different workout routines the boxer does.

Voice Overs will be used

* At the end of the advert the boxer will say how much he has gained out of the sport encouraging others to take it up

ACTORS ?

For this type of project we wont really need actors because.......

* If we were to hire an Actor I feel that it wouldn't really motivate people that much, those that are interested in sports, from an audience point of view it would just look a bit fake.

* Get one of my mates from the gym and do a couple of shots with him

* £500, least my friend wants

LOCATION & COST ?

* TRAD TKO Boxing gym

* Cost = £100 an hour, 3hrs- £300

FILM CREW, STORYBOARD & TARGET AUDIENCE (BRENDAN'S PART)

Whilst I was finding out information about the budget, actors, location & cost Brendan was finding info for the film equipment, camera man, target audience, and drawing our storyboard. What he did/found out for the film equipment is that to hire a film crew but since they didn't get back to us,the film crew we looked at was SLV (Slvision crew). Brendan thought that getting his brother to help film our project and edit it since he knows how to use professional cameras and currently studying photography at Kingston University. The camera that we were going to book out of our £7500 budget was the Sony PDW-F800 HD XDCAM which is £195.

Sony PDW-F800 HD XDCAM Camera Hire

You can film a variety of things with this camera for most productions, and it's fully BBC HD approved and the HD material is up to 50Mb/s onto Dual Layer Professional Disc. If SLV camera crew did not get back to us ASAP we would have booked this camera so Brendans brother could help film our advert.

With the storyboard it was a quite a struggle because since me & couldn't draw we decided to get his friend who does art to do a rough sketch of the boxer doing workout routines such as skipping, push ups, sit ups, chin ups, shadow boxing and so on..... and when it came to the day of our pitch Brendan would be holding up these pictures and I will be explaining what is going on and how it's going be put in our advertisement.

STORYBOARD

TARGET AUDIENCE

For our target audience we aimed it at people at ages 14+ who are interested in Boxing. What we decided to do is to make this a fast pace advert to appeal to our target audience.

(me getting ready for my pitch)

This week was ok :/...........
